Ulster Canal To Be Restored

The Irish government has given its approval for the restoration of the Ulster Canal between the Shannon-Erne Waterway and the International Scout Centre at Castle Saunderson in Co Cavan.  The project will have an economic impact on the area which is still recovering from the Troubles.

The Irish government has acquired the property at 14-17 Moore Street, the site of much of the fighting during the Easter Rising.  It is hoped that a museum will be in place for the remembrance of the 1916 Easter Rising.

1916 Commemoration Poetry Project

On Aug 30th Penn State and Univ. of Central Florida will open their football season at Croke Park, Dublin.  The event is expected to attract 20,000 tourists and will boost the economy by an estimated 10 million Euros.

Donald Trump switched his focus from Scotland to Ireland after a judge rejected his legal action against a wind energy project which he claimed would spoil the view from the golf course he was planning to build. Instead he purchased the course at Doonbeg, Co Clare, and renamed it ‘Trump International Golf Links.’

Diverse City Premises Opened

International Fund for Ireland chairman Dr. Adrian Johnston and Derry City mayor, Brenda Stevenson, officially opened the new Diverse City premises at Bishop St., Derry City.  The shared community will be used for reconciliation and community work and used as a meeting place for groups in Derry and the North West.

Ambassador to Ireland Named

After 18 months, an Ambassador to Ireland has been named. Kevin O’Malley, a St. Louis, Missouri attorney, has been assigned the post. Mr. O’Malley is a second generation Irish American. In 2009 he was also appointed as the only non-physician to the Missouri Board of Healing Arts, the state licensing and disciplinary body for physicians.
