The winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Medicine is an Irish-American, John O’Keefe, whose parents come from Co Cork.  The award is for his discovery of ‘place cells’ in the area of the brain that allows the brain to have its own GPS system.  This could have a major impact on Alzheimer’s disease and other brain diseases.
