Saltee Island History

The Saltee Island off the coast of Wexford claims to be among the ancient islands of western Europe since they are based on Pre-Cambrian bedrock, estimated at being between 600 million and 2,000 million years old.  Archaeological evidence has been found of a settlement from Neolithic times. The Saltee Islands are mainly known as a haven for birds. They are the most important migratory routes for birds traveling to their breeding or wintering grounds, and they have huge nesting colonies of sea birds such as fulmars, gannets, guillemots and razorbills.
