Easter Rising

The Easter Rising took place on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916 led by Patrick Pearse’s Irish Volunteers, James Connelly’s Irish Citizen Army and the Cumann na MBan, the women’s division of the IRB.  Major buildings were seized in Dublin and an Irish Republic independent of the UK was proclaimed.  1,250 rebels fought 16,000 English soldiers and 1,000 armed police until the rebels surrendered on Apr.29.  The leaders were all executed. A Mass was celebrated last week in Dublin in Mary Immaculate Church to commemorate forty children who died during the Rising.
