The saying ‘by hook or by crook’ is unknown but one possible explanation is that when Cromwell came to Ireland via Wexford, he sailed between Hook Head lighthouse and the village of Crook showing his determination to capture Ireland by any means; so it has come to portray determination to do something by any means necessary.
