As part of RTE’s buildup to the 1916 Commemoration they launched a project titled “A Poem for Ireland”. 30 poems were nominated and participants were asked to whittle the list down to 10. These are up for a public vote. All are listed along with information about the poet along with audio and video clips. You may place your vote up to Mar 8. Go to : Apoemforireland.rte.ie

Tuatha De Danann Race

According to folklore, Ireland was not always ruled by humans.  Many different races were said to call Ireland “home.”  The most important of these were the Tuatha De Danann.  They had tremendous powers and fought many battles while in control of Ireland.

A 19th Century stage coach route in Co Kerry has been turned into self-guided tours through villages and towns of Kerry.

Irish Diaspora

The Irish diaspora totals about 170 million and about half are in the US.

The Humanist Society of Ireland is calling for a ban on baptismal certificates as proof of a child’s religious affiliation.  Almost 6% of people in the Republic said they had no religion in a 2011 poll.  85% said they were catholic.  The church controls about 905 of the primary schools.

William Eris

It is thought that an Irishman from Galway named William Eris accompanied Columbus in 1492 in his voyage to America.  It is thought he was one of 40 volunteers who stayed behind in Hispaniola and were killed by Indians.

It is said a dip in the River Shannon will cure bashfulness and inhibitions.
