Irish Visit Their Mammies

One in two Irish people see their mammies once a week for Sunday lunch and one fourth speak to her 4-5 times a week.  This survey was passed around by Del Vita breakfast as part of their launch of Irish Mammies Company.

Ennistymon, Co Clare is noted for its Cascade Walk.  It runs along the River Guillenagh and clashes over slabs of rock.

An Irish Saying

A whistling woman or a crowing hen was never good for God or men.

Movry Castle

Moyry Castle was built in 1600 by Lord Mountjoy, Queen Elizabeth’s most ruthless general, to protect the main highway from Dublin to Belfast which was plagued by highway men.  The area was called Rock of the Robbers.  Mountjoy cleared the area by cutting the woods and building the castle on a rock.  When a mapmaker came into their territory in 1609, the inhabitants didn’t take too kindly to him and cut off his head.  After this the Crown’s surveyors worked only under armed guard.

Couples can now test their DNA to see if their offspring will have ginger hair.  Experts estimate that if two parents have the gene, there is a 1 in 4 chance of having a red-haired child even if neither parent has red hair.
