Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Founder

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1824 by Richard Martin, a landlord from Connemara.  He was called ‘Hair Trigger Dick’ because of his agility in dueling and ‘Humanity Martin’ for his generosity to his tenants.
