Besides being famous for its’ wonderful cuisine, there are many historic facts associated with Kinsale, among them being the cause of the ‘Flight of the Earls’ when the English defeated the Irish in 1601 at the Battle of Kinsale. Alexander Selkirk the inspiration for “Robinson Crusoe” sailed from Kinsale in his epic voyage; Daniel Defoe lived here as did Anne Bonny, the famous pirate. The town’s old tax code is still on a wall in the Square. It reads: “Whatever a child could carry on his back into the town was tax-free.”
