Kieran Beyan, only the second gymnast to go to the Olympics from Ireland, overcame many obstacles in getting there. At 11 yrs. he had surgery on his leg for a benign tumor. The surgery was botched and he was told he would never walk again. He fought back and took up gymnastics. Shortly after, he broke an arm and a wrist and then hit his head on the parallel bars resulting in a traumatic injury that caused blackouts. In 2010 prior to the European Championship he tore the ligament in his knee. He broke his arm and his wrist, suffered a torn ligament in his other knee but came back in 2011 to win 3 World Cup medals, Ireland’s first in gymnastics. He made it to the London Olympics but failed to medal but said he was happy just to get there.
