“11th Night” is a celebration observed by Protestants in the North of Ireland who build huge bonfires on the night of July 11. The fires commemorate the victory of King William of Orange over King James in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne. It is celebrated on the 12th because 11 days were lost when the Gregorian calendar was adopted.
On July 12, 1691 the Battle of Aughrim took place in Galway which was the decisive battle.
