Handel’s “Messiah”, now traditionally a Christmas performance, was first presented on Apr 13, 1742 in Dublin during the Lenten season.  It was such a sensation that at a future concert the male attendees were requested not to wear swords and the ladies not to wear hoops so as to make room for as many people as possible in the theatre.
