Gorse is indigenous to early summer and is hated by farmers because of its invasive properties. But in the past it was used to start fires, clean chimneys, and as a flavoring for whiskey. It had medicinal and magical powers as it prevented the “good people” from stealing the May Day butter. In mid-summer blazing branches were carried around the herd to bring good health to the cows the coming year. Source: Farmer’s Journal
