Countess Markievicz was born Constance Gore-Booth on February 2, 1868. She worked in Cumann na mBan and served as second in command to Michael Mallon in St. Stephen’s Green in Easter Rising 1916. In 1916 she was the first woman elected to the British House of Commons. As a cabinet minister in the first Dail Eireann, she was the first woman in Western Europe to hold that post as well as the first woman minister of labor.
