Donegal has won the coveted ‘Sam Maguire Cup” against Mayo with a score of 2-11 to 0-13. Sam Maguire was Michael Collins’ chief intelligence officer in London but later went with the Anti-Treaty forces. He was chairman of the London county board of GAA and trustee of Croke Park. He captained the successful London Hibernians Gaelic football team to several All-Ireland finals between 1900 and 1904. The Cup was designed and presented to GAA in 1928 in his honor after his death in 1927. He died in Cork where he lived after he was sacked by the government and denied his pension. He died in poverty of TB at the age of 48.
