A painting called ‘The Ragpickers’ has been added to the collection at Quinnipac University’s Great Hunger Museum.  It is a 1900 painting by Henry Allen.  Ragpickers were common in the late 19th Century, and they made their living by rummaging for scraps of clothing or paper and then selling them.

Irish Pubs Succumb to Recession

In 2012, 150 pubs closed in Ireland.  The recession and the low cost of alcohol being sold in supermarkets is said to be responsible.

Former Irish president, Mary McAleese, is having a bridge named after her.  The bridge is one of the main links between Dublin and Belfast.  The bridge runs over the Boyne River.  Mrs. McAleese was born in Belfast.

Unemployment Rates from Eurostat

Eurostat reports that levels of unemployment is highest in border areas, the west and the midlands. Youth unemployment is much higher at 30.4% while the European average is 22.9%.
