Centuries old traditions tell us to eat pork on New Year’s Day, as the pig ‘roots forward’ and never chicken because it ‘scratches back’.  Salmon is good also since it swims forward but not crab since they walk backward.  Root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes and turnips are good luck.
