Daniel O’Connell, also known as ‘the Liberator’, dominated Irish politics during the first half of the 19th Century. He was one of the first Catholics to enter the legal profession (1798). He won emancipation for the Catholics giving them back their dignity and self-respect.

Many famous people are buried in Mount Jerome cemetery south of Dublin. These include J.B. Yeats, John Milington Syne, Wm. Wilde (father of Oscar Wilde), A.E. Russell, Thomas Davis, Ned Kelly (actor “Waking Ned Devine”) and Maeve Binchey. This was formerly Mt. Jerome Estate and was used frequently by the United Irishmen for meetings.

Colonel Bernard Irwin was an Irish born US Army Assistant Surgeon who was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor. He was awarded this in 1894 for his bravery in the Indian Wars in 1861.
