Origin of the Word Boycott

Sept 19, 1880-Charles Stewart Parnell delivers his famous speech in Ennis, Co. Clare, introducing the term for non-violent intimidation which then enters the English language – ‘boycott’ after a land agent named Boycott who mistreated the tenants.

In 1792, after winning a competition held by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, James Hoban, a native of  Kilkenny, was chosen as the designer of the original White House.  When this was burned during the War of 1812, he oversaw the restoration afterward.

The Celtic Harp

The Celtic harp has been an important part of Irish nationalism since the 10th Century.  Harpers were highly trained and played for the nobility and enjoyed political power.  The Trinity College Harp, one of Ireland’s national treasures, is the one from which the national symbol of Ireland is copied.
