Feb.20, 1942, Edward ‘Butch’ O’Hare for whom O’Hare airport in Chicago is named was the first Navy ace to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He was credited with downing five Japanese bombers in one day. His father was an attorney for the Capone family and testified against Al Capone. He was later murdered.

Sean MacBride was the first Irishman to win the Nobel and Lenin Peace Prizes. He was the son of Maude Gonne and John MacBride who was executed after the Easter Rising.

Jan 6th, 1839 was the night of the “Big Wind” when a hurricane slammed into Ireland, destroying every second home, leaving thousands homeless (mostly the poor) and hundreds dead. This past Dec 26 saw another ‘Big Wind’ hit with winds gusting to 120 miles/hour and lasting 18 hours.
