Elder Moon

Nov 25-Dec 23 – This  is the time of the ‘Elder Moon’.  The winter solstice has passed and the Elder Moon is a time of endings.  Although the Elder can be damaged easily, it recovers quickly and springs back to life, corresponding to the New Year.

Georgia O’Keefe

Irish-American Georgia O’Keefe received recognition by challenging the boundaries of American art and was celebrated for her technical skills. She was known for her vibrantly colored paintings including many large scale works.  She died in 1986 at the age of 99.

A silent mouth is melodious.

A constant guest is never welcome.

One legend of the Blarney Stone is that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward the king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly.

Irish Wake Game

One game played at wakes was called ‘wrestling.’  A man would come to the wake dressed in a suit of straw and challenge all to wrestle him.

Echtra

Celtic tales of voyages in which the hero is lured by a beautiful woman to an island in the Western Sea were called ‘echtra’.  The hero could never return from this island and those who tried were turned to dust when they touched the land of Ireland since hundreds of years had passed since they had left.

The street in Dublin dedicated to pubs is ‘Winetavern Street.’

The Irish word for visiting friends and relatives is’scoreachting.’
