The “Fair City”

Dublin is called the “Fair City” after the song ‘Molly Malone’.

Musicologist Herbert Hughes in the early 1900’s roamed the hills of Donegal and the Glens of Antrim collecting old folk songs.  His collection can be found in the ‘Historical Songs and Ballads of Ireland’ and ‘Songs of Uladh’.

Solstice Festivals

The summer and winter solstice are the oldest festivals known to man. The winter solstice this year takes place on Dec 21 at 12:11 P.M. Eastern Standard Time.  This Druidic festival was called ‘Yule’ and the custom was to burn a log which was coated with flour, decked with garlands and sprinkled with cider or ale.  The log had to come from your own land or received as a gift and never purchased.  It was lit with ashes from the previous year’s log.  This represented light being passed from one year to the next.

Homing Stone

A ‘homing stone’ refers to a piece of rock that is removed from a sacred well or shrine and mysteriously returns to the place of origin.

The origin of the term ‘Emerald Isle’ comes from a poem written by Wm. Drennan in 1795:

“When Erin first rose from the dark swelling flood,
God blessed the green island,  He saw it was good.
The emerald of Europe, it sparkled and shone
In the ring of this world, the most precious stone.”

W. C. Sellar Quote

“Gladstone spent his declining years trying to find the  answer to the Irish question.  Unfortunately, whenever he was getting warm, the Irish changed the question.”

Ireland’s High Crosses

Ireland’s High Crosses are called ‘Sermons in Stone’.  They were designed as a sort of Bible for the poor who couldn’t read.  They depict stories from the Old and New Testaments.

Ireland’s only Amish-Mennonite community is located in Dunmore East, Co Waterford.  It was founded in 1992 by American Wm. McGrath and consists of 75 members.  They belong to a faction that is more open and adaptable than other Amish groups.  They make use of I-pads and internet but are subject to guidelines.

The Irish Wilderness

The Ozark Mountains in Missouri are called ‘The Irish Wilderness’.
