After Irish Catholics rebelled against the domination of English and Protestant settlers (1642-49) the Catholic gentry ruled briefly as “Confederate Ireland”.

Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park, Donegal contains 24,000 acres of protected wilderness.  The greatest danger to the park is the rhododendron.  A constant battle is fought to control the spread of this foreign invader which kills every other plant and is poisonous to animals.

On Sept 4, 1798 the French general Humbert leaves Castlebar for Sligo with 800 French soldiers and 1,000 Irish on his way to Ulster where he is defeated by Cornwallis.  French are given no quarter while Irish are slaughtered.

Celtic Belief Systems

It is clear from Roman writings that the Celts had their own complex and sophisticated belief systems involving various gods, goddesses, heroes and villains.  They passed their stories down through the generations by word of mouth.  Ireland is the richest source of these tales because they were isolated from mainland Europe for much of its history and so the stories remained intact.

Leinster has been the scene of some of the most crucial events in Irish history, especially the Battle of the Boyne, which assured English domination over Ireland (1690) which was preceded in 1649 by Cromwell’s invasion which dispersed or killed every Catholic opponent to English rule.

A new guide to completing passport applications in Ireland has been issued by the Dept. of Foreign Affairs due to 80,000 incomplete applications each year.
