Dec 26, 1601 Hugh O’Neill was defeated in one of the most important battles of Ireland. In Kinsale he awaited help from the Spanish which didn’t arrive and he was forced to retreat. He sailed to Europe several years later in what is known as the “Flight of the Earls” and Ireland was lost to the English.

The marquees of theatres on Broadway dimmed their lights for one minute last Tues. in honor of Irish playwright Brian Friel who died last Oct. He wrote the Tony Award winning play “Dancing at Lughnasa” and “Philadelphia, Here I Come” among others.

Mussenden Tower

Mussenden Tower sits on top of the Derry Cliffs. It was the creation of the 18th Century Anglican Bishop Fredrick Harvey who built it in honor of his cousin Frideswide Mussenden who died before it was completed. Harvey allowed the Catholics to use it for Mass since there was no local church for them.
