Hillsborough Castle

Hillsborough Castle, Co Down, is the official residence of the queen and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.  It was recently opened to the public but only with a tour guide.

Ten drawings of Leonardo da Vinci will be on display in Dublin at the National Museum in early summer.  The display includes anatomical drawings of internal organs as well as horses, lions, cats and a dragon.

Ireland’s first luxury sleeper train will be in operation later this year.  It will cover scenic and iconic parts of the island and is available for 2, 4, or 6 nights with costs ranging from £2,338 to £5, 714 per person.

Loftus House, Hook Peninsula, Co Wexford, has been named the most haunted house in Ireland by Irish Ghost Hunters who experienced major temperature drops and electromagnetic field spikes.  The investigators said that the team is scientific, and they don’t work with psychics or mediums.  They use their own equipment and try to debunk everything before they say it is paranormal.

Irish teen, Joanne O’Riordan from Co Cork, has been shortlisted for the honor of World’s Top 20 Young People by Junior Chamber International.  She is being credited with persuading the government to rethink its disability policy.  Joanne has a congenital disorder that caused her to be born without any limbs.  She is only one of seven people in the world to have this condition. She is working with Trinity College of Dublin to build a robot which will enable people with disabilities to function and live independently.

Ireland is teaming up with the UK in a tourism drive.  Over 300 international buyers in 40 different countries have been hearing about Ireland thanks to tourism organization “Visit Britain.”

Director Neill Jordan has announced the re-release of his film “Michael Collins” in March.

Newly discovered documents have been released that reveal Countess Markiewicz used plans in the Easter Rising that were drawn up by Robert Emmett in 1803.  They are being made public as part of the centenary celebration.  The Countess was heavily involved in the planning and had researched the points of attack and defense and a list of things that had changed in the previous 113 years the rebellion.

A geological survey has tested areas with modern technology and found evidence that there could be far more precious metals in the south eastern part of Ireland than previously thought. A spokesman said, “There is more platinum, gold and precious metals in the streams and rivers than believed.” They hope the findings will encourage exploration companies to invest, thus creating more jobs.
