Bernardo O’Higgins and John MacKenna have been honored for their role in Chile’s independence by having stamps issued in Ireland and Chile. O’Higgins who was one of the country’s founding fathers, was the son of the Irish born Governor of Chile and fought to overthrow the Spanish administrators. MacKenna was commandant-general of O’Higgins’ army. He won a famous victory at Membrillo. Both men are pictured on the stamps in full military dress.
