Museum of Free Derry

Located in the heart of the Bogside & Brandywell area, the Museum of Free Derry is a permanent, multi-media exhibit of one of Derry’s most important historical periods – the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. It especially features the events on the 30th of January 1972 (Bloody Sunday), when a peaceful civil rights march turned into a massacre by British soldiers who opened fire, killing 14 and wounding another 14 unarmed men and women.
The museum houses over 20,000 artifacts, most of which have been donated by local residents. It is open to the public year round and relies heavily on private contributions for operating funds and upkeep.
