A cofounder of the Abbey Theatre, now also known as the national theater of Ireland, playwright John Millington Synge is perhaps the most famous for his play “The Playboy of the Western World.” The first-run production instigated rioting at the Abbey Theatre by attendees who thought the play slighted the virtue of Irish women. Synge died at the age of 37 from Hodgkin’s disease.
