Amid claims that the Irish language is in decline, the Gaeltacht Bill has been proposed which will offer a truer picture of the Gaeltachts.  Designated areas will be based on linguistics rather than location creating 19 language planning areas.  In  Northern Ireland, the establishment of a Gaeltacht area is ongoing in West Belfast.
