May 21st has been officially designated ‘Amelia Earhart Day.’ On May 20th in Derry the Amelia Earhart Gala Ball and Cultural Celebration will be held in the City Hotel to honor Amelia Earhart, the first person to make a solo trans-Atlantic flight. The celebration will include retro decor with canapes, gangsters and dancing girls. (There is a rumor that Earhart will make an appearance.)

After leaving Newfoundland, Earhart landed at Ballyarnett, Co. Derry in May 1932, and enthusiasts want to have her plane, which is on display in the Smithsonian, dismantled and brought back to Derry where it will be re-assembled and put on display for Derry’s ‘City of Culture’ celebration in 2013.
