The town of Midleton, Co Cork, will be installing a sculpture of 9 eagle feathers to thank the Choctaw Indians for their support during the Great Hunger. In 1847, they donated $170.00 for relief of the hungry. In today’s terms, this would amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Sixteen years previously President Jackson had forced their tribe off their land and re-located them to Oklahoma in a 500 mile trek which became known as the “Trail of Tears”.
